When the Canadian air force was formed in 1923, the High River Air Station was the busiest in the country. Throughout the 1920s, High River was at the forefront of aviation in Canada, conducting flights in Southern Alberta as part of a fire-protection program, aerial photography, record-breaking parachute jumps and pioneering work in radio.

The air force returned to High River in earnest during the Second World War, as the Calgary Aero Club and the RCAF combined to operate a very successful Elementary Flying Training School that graduated thousands of young pilots for service overseas.

A close relationship also developed between the Town of High River and the flying school, through entertaining royalty, fighting wildfires and floods, and hosting community sports days and dances together. (6″ x9 ″; 124 pages; 116 photos)
